    T. rex was closer to humans than to Stegosaurus.

Many people imagine dinosaurs living together in the same forests. Movies often show them fighting or roaming side by side.

However, real science tells a very different story.

Some of the most famous dinosaurs actually lived tens of millions of years apart. In fact, the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex lived closer in time to modern humans than it did to Stegosaurus.

This surprising timeline changes how we think about the age of dinosaurs.

When Did These Dinosaurs Actually Live?

Dinosaurs existed for a very long time in Earth’s history. However, different species appeared during different geological periods.

    For example:

    • Tyrannosaurus rex lived about 66–68 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.
    • Stegosaurus lived about 150–155 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period.

That means there were roughly 80–90 million years between them.

So despite appearing together in films, these dinosaurs never lived at the same time.

    A Timeline That Changes Everything

To understand how big that gap is, it helps to compare it with human history.

The extinction of Tyrannosaurus rex happened around 66 million years ago.

That is roughly the same amount of time separating T. rex from modern humans.

    In other words:

    • Time between Stegosaurus → T. rex: about 85 million years
    • Time between T. rex → humans: about 66 million years

Because of this, T. rex lived closer to us than it did to Stegosaurus.

The Dinosaur Era Was Incredibly Long

Many people think of the dinosaur age as one single era. However, it actually lasted for more than 160 million years.

    During that time:

    • Continents moved across the planet
    • Climate changed many times
    • New species evolved while others disappeared

Scientists divide this massive span into three major periods:

    1. Triassic Period
    2. Jurassic Period
    3. Cretaceous Period

Each period had completely different ecosystems and dominant species.

    Entire Worlds Existed Between Them

Because of the massive time gap, T. rex and Stegosaurus lived in totally different worlds.

    Between their eras:

    • Oceans expanded and shrank
    • Forests changed dramatically
    • New plants and animals evolved
    • Entire ecosystems appeared and vanished

Millions of generations passed before T. rex ever appeared on Earth.

A Fun Comparison With Modern Technology

To make this timeline easier to imagine, consider modern technology.

The iPhone feels incredibly recent in human history.

Yet even the invention of the iPhone is still closer in time to T. rex than T. rex was to Stegosaurus.

This comparison highlights just how enormous geological time really is.

    Why Understanding Deep Time Matters

Learning about these timelines helps us understand Earth’s long history.

It also reminds us that life constantly evolves.

    Over millions of years:

    • Species appear and disappear
    • Environments change
    • New ecosystems develop

Dinosaurs ruled the planet for an incredibly long time. However, even their reign was only one chapter in Earth’s story.

    FAQs

Did T. rex and Stegosaurus live together?

No. They lived about 80–90 million years apart, so they never shared the same ecosystems.

    Which dinosaur lived earlier?

Stegosaurus lived earlier during the Jurassic period, while T. rex appeared much later in the Cretaceous period.

How long did dinosaurs exist on Earth?

Dinosaurs lived for over 160 million years, making it one of the longest eras of dominant animal life.

Why do movies show dinosaurs together?

Films often combine species from different time periods to create exciting scenes, even though it is not scientifically accurate.

    Final Thoughts

The history of dinosaurs is far more complex than many people imagine.

Instead of one single moment in time, the dinosaur era stretched across more than 160 million years of Earth’s history.

During that time, countless species evolved, disappeared, and reshaped the planet’s ecosystems.

Understanding that T. rex lived closer to modern humans than to Stegosaurus helps put the scale of deep time into perspective.

It also reminds us that Earth’s story is much bigger — and much longer — than our everyday view of history.
